What are anklets and jesses?

Hello everyone!

We have a lot of people who are not only owl lovers, but also people from overseas and animal lovers on our Instagram and Twitter pages.
Some of you may have just happened to see our instagram and twitter feeds.
Thank you very much for your interest in our shop!

The most common question we get is "Why do you tie your legs together? "
When you look at an owl's feet, there is always a string attached, right?
The leather part attached to the foot to connect the string is an anklet
The leather part attached to the end of the string is the jess and the lead.
Anklets are made of kangaroo or cowhide leather and are made to fit the size of an individual's feet.
You can think of it like a collar or harness for dogs and cats.

The owner must keep a close watch on the owl to prevent it from getting lost, crashing into glass, or accidentally swallowing something.
But you can't watch them 24 hours a day, can you?

Also, except for specially trained owls, you are not allowed to let them go outdoors without a leash.
This means that they can't sunbathe on the balcony...or go to the hospital for a checkup.
It is not because they are not potty trained or because you want them to be in the same place.
I feel sorry for them if they are putting them on because they want them to stay still, thinking that restricting their behavior is not stressful.
We wear anklets and leashes to prevent accidents that could be prevented by wearing them.

We also wear them to prevent children who don't get along with each other from fighting, because our home is not a very big store.
It also helps to reduce stress for the owls by making them aware of their own territory.

If you don't know why they need to be attached, you may feel sorry for them.
But I hope you will understand that it is necessary for the owls.

Recently, there are more and more lightweight and detachable items that are less stressful on the body, and you can choose various types depending on how you keep your owls.
If you keep owls at home, please find one that suits your owls according to how you want to spend time with them and their personalities (Active・mature etc.).

In the case of owlvillage, the staff can watch over the owls during the daytime, so the owls that get along well with each other are set free in turn.
They are free to play in the cafe space or fly to their favorite places in the owl's room.
